Vision Coverage

When it comes to vision coverage, Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage include coverage for medical or health related vision. This includes outpatient physician services for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and injuries of the eye, including treatment for age-related macular degeneration.

Routine Eye Care: Original Medicare and Medicare Supplements do not cover Routine Eye Care, like routine eye exams (with refraction) and eyewear.

Stand-alone vision plans: As I’ve noted before, I’ve been helping people with Medicare insurance for 11+ years and in working with several thousand Medicare beneficiaries I have NEVER sold a stand-along vision plan to someone. It’s not that people don’t ask, they do. But the reality is, these policies aren’t usually worth it. If you have questions about vision plans, then please contact me.

Medicare Advantage Vision Coverage Options: Many Medicare Advantage Plans come with routine vision coverage for your annual routine eye exam. In addition, some of the plans have an allowance for eyewear. Usually, this is all you need.

Some Medicare Advantage Plans offer vision coverage as an Optional Supplemental Benefit that you pay an additional premium for. I have only found these worthwhile if you need new expensive lenses every year. I have actually sold a few of these policies.
