Forbes Health Reveals Key Facts About Medicare Advantage Plans

In a recent article the Forbes Health editorial team stated they “determined the best Medicare Advantage providers of 2022, analyzing U.S. insurance companies that offer nationwide plans by the number of states they provide coverage in, the variety of benefits they offer, how they were ranked by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), how they were ranked in terms of their financial health by agencies like A.M. Best, how agencies like J.D. Power ranked them in the manner of consumer feedback and more.”

The Two Most Important Things Forbes Health Revealed In Their Article Are

# 1. No one plan is right for everyone…including your spouse. And, it can be difficult to choose correctly. Forbes Health states:

“Finding the right insurance plan is also highly customized to the individual.

# 2. Use an independent, knowledgeable insurance agent. Forbes Health states:

Seeking the assistance of an independent, agnostic health insurance agent is the best way to navigate this overwhelming task.”

They also quote Joe Valenzuela as saying:

“Find a knowledgeable insurance agent. Having an agent doesn’t cost the member anything. Medicare insurance agents are subject matter experts—many have spent years learning the ins and outs of each plan they represent. There are also many nuanced differences between Medicare Advantage plans. An agent can narrow down the search to only those plans that most closely align with the client’s needs.”

And that folks, is me. As I tell other Medicare beneficiaries like yourself, you should avoid dealing with either one insurance company (after all, they won’t tell you about their competition), or dealing with these large 800# insurance agencies and telemarketers. CMS/Medicare has started cracking down on the companies running all those ads about you “getting everything you are entitled to” and you would be wise to avoid dealing with them. The odds of you making a wise and confident decision and choosing the right plan for our unique needs will be slim.

Oh, and which companies did Forbes Health state had the “best” Medicare Advantage Plans? In order, here they are:

  1. Humana: Not surprising to me. Most of my Medicare Advantage clients are on Humana plans. I very rarely get complaints and quite often hear lots of praise about how they “love their Humana plan.” If you live anywhere in Virginia, there’s a Humana plan available for you. Humana’s bread and butter is Medicare Advantage.
  2. Blue Cross Blue Shield: In Virginia, this is Anthem or now known as Elevance Heath. They are expanding their Medicare Advantage coverage areas and their networks. It’s their network stability that concerns me the most. But, now that they seem to be taking Medicare Advantage more seriously (speaking of Anthem here), I’m hoping their network stability issues here in Virginia are a thing of the past.
  3. Cigna: For Virginia, Cigna’s coverage is sparse.
  4. United Healthcare: The largest publicly traded insurance company of them all. United Healthcare has the largest amount of Medicare Advantage members in the country…but, not in Virginia. Their coverage is more limited than Humana’s and Anthem’s as of 2023. And, their networks aren’t as large.
  5. Aetna: Like United Healthcare, they do not cover the entire state of Virginia and typically have a smaller network as compared to Humana and Anthem/Blue Cross Blue Shield.

**What does this mean for you? Does this mean you should choose Humana because Forbes Health rates them the “best”? Absolutely not.

What this means for you is, you should check with me to find most suitable plan for your unique needs and find out which one has the most providers in-network and which one offers the most suitable drug coverage for you.
